MYNTE HUS (MINT HOUSE)
DANISH INSTITUTE OF STUDY ABROAD - Architecture Studio Foundations
2018
In my architecture studio class during my time abroad in Denmark, we were tasked with creating a small community building on the historic krusmyntegåde (Spearmint Street) in Copenhagen. The building had to fit within a 10 meter square space and have a 3.5 meter wide alleyway cut out of it. The community house sits between a row of colorful 19th century stone houses and a larger all-female apartment complex. I wanted to create a community center that felt like a natural, modern extension of the surrounding architecture, without disrupting the language of the historic neighborhood. I preserved the local style of rectangular houses with gable roofs, yet wanted to bridge the gap between the large apartment building to the smaller row house in a way that provided a natural flow - thus I created an asymmetric roof that connected to both structures.
