REEF STAR

A MODULAR LIVING SCULPTURE

“REEFSTAR” tells the story of an ancient Cambrian sea god, a temple to all marine life, awakened from the primordial depths. It has returned to call upon its children - in all its bejeweled glory - to reclaim and restore their salty domain.

Inspired by prehistoric human stone work, ancient deities, and sea star morphology, “REEFSTAR” acts as a regenerative architectural ecosystem. It is a living sculpture - dynamic and ever-changing as it transforms from a striking man-made form to a fully integrated part of the ocean’s complex tapestry of life. By reversing modern techniques of expansion (where nature is destroyed to make way for human development), overtime “REEFSTAR" will be totally engulfed by marine species that will shape it to their own needs.

“REEFSTAR” stands as a tribute to the intricate beauty of coral reefs - an homage to nature's architects and the countless species that find habitation within them. My goal is to not replace natural corals but instead aid in their ability to grow organically and provide crucial marine habitats so that the resulting design is a collaboration between humans and nature.

For the final product, I plan on using ECOncrete, a new concrete that aids in carbon sequestration and coral growth. Additionally, I will be experimenting with mixing cement and bio charcoal which creates a striking dark color while reducing the environmental impact of the concrete, and increasing compressive strength. The mixture will also be casted to facilitate air bubbles to create a bumpy/ porous texture perfect for algae, coral, and mollusk adhesion. Additionally, upcycled iridescent sea shells will lure surrounding marine organisms, as well as provide aesthetic and value to the site and intrigue for visiting divers.
