CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY - Second Stage

2019

For Wesleyan’s fall play I worked as the head set designer to design and construct the set for the play, “Casa de Bernarda Alba.” The house is described as being barren, sterile, with windows and doors always bricked up, yet having constant surveillance by not only the matriarch Bernarda and the ghost of the family’s late father, but the entire village. I was inspired to create a set that simultaneously felt transparent, yet repressed - watched over and controlled, yet isolating and closed off to the outside world. The bright white walls intensify not only the blaze of the Spanish sun, but also the boiling tension between the characters. The poster design depicts Bernarda’s cane, representing her firm grip over the household, yet her frailty and struggle to control them. The Wesleyan Argus wrote, “the set design by Grace Morenko ’20 captures the elegance of this wealthy yet sanitized household.”
