SCOBY LAMP: An exploration of alternative materials

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY - Intro to Design and Engineering

2019

For my final project in my Design and Engineering class, I was interested in exploring new sustainable materials. I had always been interested in science and design, so with this project I discovered my love for sustainable industrial design and alternative textiles. Due to some time constraints I decided to create a small lamp shade from SCOBY leather I grew and dyed to show it’s flexible properties and permeability to light and color. Additionally, I used an old glass Kombucha bottle for the base of the frame and added laser cut elements for stability.
