GNITS BROOKLYN

Sustainable Knitwear for Progressive Causes

During the 2020 lockdowns I was unable to return to my university campus. Without access to my studios or the resources of our art department, I became anxious to create as any designer would. Growing up I was taught to sew, knit and embroider by the women in my family who come from a long line of textile workers - I began to knit avidly. The summer of 2020 was also an important reckoning for historic racial injustices across the globe, and wanting to put my creative energy to good use, I started GNITS (pronounced with a silent “G”) to raise money for BLM organizations and other progressive causes. I designed and hand knit custom pieces, gained experience with budgeting, customer service, and managing the GNITS social media account.
